Very early models had no method available.
Soon an eccentric nut was devised, and with a screwdriver, small ajustments of the screw raised or lowered the pivot.
Cheaper models used an arm. It was simply bent as required.
Others used the bracket that held the top block. The holes on the bracket were over-sized, and this allowed for the adjustment.
